Puppy training is essential for proper development

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppy Training

If you want your puppy to grow into a good, well trained dog you need to concentrate on it’s development.  You simply cannot expect a dog to be well behaved when it doesn’t know how to.  And basically it all boils down to training them properly and making sure that you get them to do what they’re told…

When you set about training your puppy you need to establish a few ground rules.  The first rule must be that you are in charge and that your puppy does exactly as it is told.  Now your puppy doesn’t know what to do until you show it, so any form of discipline must be completely out of the question.  When your dog jumps up and you don’t want it to, you don’t hit it, you move away and when your dog sits and doesn’t jump up you tell it what a good dog it has been.  It’s all about rewarding good behaviour and ignorning bad behaviour.  If you can do this then your dog will develop into a good dog in no time at all.

Remember that the seeds of a good a dog begin as a puppy.  If you don’t train your puppy then you won’t get a good dog.

Puppies will make a mess – part two

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppies

I’ve already written a little post on your puppy and how it can make quite a natural mess when you’re all tucked up in bed, so you might want to go and read it before you start this one.  This post will continue talking about how messy your puppy is and promote tolerance and understanding of the puppy rather than punishing its behaviour… Read more…

Puppies will make a mess

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppies

You need to know a few things about your puppy before you buy it don’t you?  Of course you do.  And that is why you’re here on this site doing the decent thing by reading what i have to say about them; presumably because i know what i’m talking about right?  right…

Well as a matter of fact i do know what i’m talking about when it comes to puppies, not least because i know about these things, but because i have actually owned puppies in the past and have experienced all of what you are about to embark upon.  It isn’t  an easy job, i’ll tell you that piece of information straight out at the beginning, because anyone thinking that it is really needs to leave right now.

You can’t possibly write down all the things you need to know about puppies in one blog post for goodness sake, entire books have been written for this purpose, and this is why i have concerened this post with one important thing.  Puppies will make one hell of a mess.  If you think that they’re just cute then you’re very wrong.  When you wake in the morning, depending on where you left the puppy, do not be surprised to see that it has pooped and wet itself all over your floor.  This is not bad or naughty or anything like that, and a dog shouldn’t be punished for this.  Think of it as a baby without its nappy.  A baby doesn’t know what to do does it?  A puppy doesn’t either, you have to show it what to do.  So everytime you see the puppy about to do its business on the carpet, simply pick it up gently and take it to the back door or wherever it is that you exit the house and show it that it needs to do it outside.

Puppy Training with Treats

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppy Training

You might want to read an earler post of mine on Actions speaking louder than words.  The basic idea is that dogs don’t speak human languages and they never will, and we will never speak a dog’s language because as far as we know they don’t have one.  However you can still train your dog with time and good consistent methods… Read more…

Training your Puppy – Bowled over?

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppy Training

Alright, i suppose that some of you are familiar with the sight of huge dogs jumping up people and quite literally knocking the person over?  Yes?  Well it’s funny in the movies and on Last of the Summer Wine perhaps, when it happens to Compo, but it isn’t funny when it happens to yourself or a loved one… Read more…

Puppy Training – Taking Control

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppy Training

If you have been following my blog posts on training you will already have worked out that the emphasis of my advice is on establishing a pecking order in your family, much the same as a dog would naturally do in the wild.  After all, a dog is an animal with animal instincts, and it’s much easier to train a puppy to grow into a dog that does what you want if you use the innate senses they were born with to help you… Read more…
