Feeding a puppy – the beginning.

We’ve already talked a little about feeding your puppy in an earlier blog post about what to expect, but even though you now must thoroughly realise that you cannot just put your puppy on a dog food diet, there are still a few more indepth things to begin doing…

If you start doing these things now, you will make your life a lot easier in the future.  You must, quite literally show your dog how to eat properly, and more to the point, how the eating is done in your home.  This is the start of a training programme that will teach your dog valuable skills and lessons.

Imagine that you are part of a pack of wolves.  I know this sounds ridiculous, but just indulge me.  Have you ever observed wolves at feeding time?  No?  Well let me fill you in.  When a pack of wolves make a kill or find food, there is an already established pecking order for who eats first.  Yes, you guessed it, you need to establish this system in your home.  Just because you have brought a dog into your home, it doesn’t make it a human being.  You must continue to consider your puppy as a dog, and dogs do things very differently.

Another thing is that dogs don’t speak, so you can’t explain to your puppy what you are doing can you?  Actions speak louder than words here, and what you need to do is simply eat before you put down the puppies food.  Make sure you do this so it looks as though you have taken what you want first; you are the alpha male.  You can do this by putting a biscuit or cracker on a plate on the kitchen counter and eating it.  Do not make eye contact with the puppy, simply eat your biscuit and then put it’s food down.
