Merry Christmas – Love Your Dog

Author: Luke Downing  //  Category: Puppies

If you’ve got a puppy this year, please look after it.  You wouldn’t believe the statistics about how many puppies are abandoned each year through ignorance.  People just don’t know what to expect from a puppy, but this is a living thing, much the same as a baby and you need to train it and care for it in the same way…

Never has it been so true that a puppy is for life, not just for Christmas.  Personally i don’t like puppy sellers who capitalise at Christmas time, but you take your chances.  As long as you’re getting one for the right reason then it doesn’t matter i suppose.  Please remember however, that if you have bought a puppy for a child this Christmas, you are more than likely going to be taking care of that puppy.  Don’t for a second think that because your child feels like they can do everything for this puppy now, that they always will feel the same; this kind of bond is very rare, and i often see children grow out of their dog and the dog ends up being looked after by someone who didn’t want it in the first place.

If you take some time out of your schedule to help your child take care of their puppy however, then your chance of them bonding and your child becoming more competent are much greater.  Make the experince a joint one.  Most children love doing things with their parents even if they don’t admit to it, so why not teach your child to look after a puppy; learn about the family dog together and you, your child and their dog will have a very happy life together.
