Tips when buying a puppy

If you really want to buy a puppy and you have seriously considered getting one from the thousands that sit unwanted in a rescue home then there are a few things you should know about getting one; and a few things to watch out for…

You might for example go along to a nice looking family home and see a family with a whole bunch of puppies in a lovely cushioned bed in a cosy sitting room.  You’ll be welcomed inside, offered a cup of coffee perhaps while you choose which one you want, and you would be none the wiser about where the puppies have come from.  There are a few things here that you should look out for in a scene like this and a few things you need to check.

  • To begin with, you cannot see the mother of the puppies anywhere.  When you buy a puppy it is very important to be able to see the mother with the puppies.  She should be healthy looking, involved with her puppies and preferably caring for them and being a little protective.
  • You should look around to see if the house looks like the sort of place where a dog might live.  Look for details like pictures on the wall, toys, dog dishes, and even hairs in the carpet and a general messiness here and there.  If you can’t see anything like this then the place could be a front for a puppy farm where puppies are not brought up correctly and taken from the mother much too early.  They could be severely disabled and/or unsettled, and even desperately ill.

These are just a couple of serious points to consider.  Some people will go to great lengths to sell puppies because they know how popular they are.  Don’t fund them!
