Toys are Good for your Dog

There are many benefits to buying toys for your pet, and buying the right ones.  I’ll try and go over a few things in this post and hopefully by the end of it you’ll be inspired enough to go out and treat your dog to something a little special; after all they deserve it for putting up with you don’t they?…

To begin with, playing with your dog is a great way to bond and reward good behaviour.  Dogs like to play, it’s part of their natural instincts.  It is unknown whether they are actually playing or if they are practicing hunting skills or whatever they’re doing, but it’s certainly obvious that they like it.  So when you’ve moved away from constantly giving your dog a treat to reward its good behaviour during training you can give your dog a little playtime.  Playtime with you is important and it’s another good way to assert that you are the pack leader and that you play when you want to, not when your dog does.

If you’re going to play with your dog then you’ll need something like a ball to toss away and for your dog to return.  Please don’t start using sticks that you find on the ground.  Too often i hear about dogs that have pierced their mouths or broken teeth on things sticking in the piece of wood you’ve just tossed.  However, if you’re going to get a ball make sure you get one that your dog won’t swallow or rip to shreds on the first go!  There are balls on the end of pieces of rope on the market at the moment and these are excellent for throwing.

I’ll move onto some other toys and their benefits in the next blog post.  In the meantime, look after your dog and your dog will look after you.
