The labrador is another breed of dog that has been bred socially to be around people, and it is actually the most popular breed of dog in the world at this present time. It’s not difficult to see why either when you look at all the great attributes that go into its breed…
To begin with, it’s another dog, like the golden retriever and other sociable dogs, that has been bred for hunting. This is an important fact to remember since the hunting dog has always been required to be good at waiting. It has ancestors in the Newfoundland breed too, and it has inherited this breeds unique type of webbed paw to enable it to travel through water more easy (in fact one of the original uses of the labrador was to retrieve fishing nets!) It is also great at waterfowl hunting, and due to its swimming ability and its water repelling coat, this dog is perfectly suited to the water.
Like the golden retiever, the labrador is a very family friendly dog, but it is much more active and athletic than the retriever and likes to play a lot more catching and running games with children; and it is not a dog that’s easily tired out. The labrador stays young at heart for a long time, so it’s a good idea to have a large playful family that can manage its good mood.
