They are such a wonderful family pet because they have this unique ability to bond with each individual family member differently, in much the same way as human beings do really. The retriever will no how to socialise with each member of the family better than those already in the family, and in a matter of it’s first few months among them.
The retriever, as its name suggests, was originally bred to be a hunting dog to “retrieve” game whilst on a hunt; and an exceptional dog it is at this too, although there aren’t too many of the bread doing it these days, since hunting has gone rather more out of fashion than it used to be.
The retriever has a gentle, untroubled disposition, and any acts of hostility or anger are alien to the breed. This is sadly why they make absolutely pathetic guard dogs, they couldn’t be angry or impatient with anyone, and their ability and ease of temperament to strangers is often as familiar as it is with their own family.
A calm, naturally perfect dog for a family, the retriever is certainly a good breed!
